Welcome to the Ion Beam Network
(A UK Research Network for Bio-Medical Applications of High Energy Ion Beams Sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council)
Details of the next Network Meeting
Introduction
MeV ion beams can be used to study the way in which radiation interacts with living cells and tissues. They can also be used to map quantitatively the spatial and depth distribution of a wide range of elements (down to ppm levels) in biological and medical samples.
The next generation of research will employ much smaller beam diameters (50–100nm) making it possible to target and analyse much smaller, intra-cellular structures. In addition, there is the potential for these MeV ion nano-beams to fabricate three dimensional, high aspect ratio nano-structures which have a range of exciting bio-medical applications.
Coupled with advances in medical imaging ion beams also offer a powerful new tool for the treatment of cancer.
